Small studio. Powerful results.

DigitalRealm Media was a two-person web and print studio that believed no business was too small for the web. This is its notebook, reopened: every surviving page and post, quoted in full, with notes from 2026 in the margin.

What that era got right

A small studio in 2006 was selling ideas that the web has since taken for granted. Its pages argued, again and again, for valid markup, CSS for presentation, sites that worked in every browser, and a website for every business however small. Read twenty years later, the arguments are worth keeping even where the tools are long gone.

Held up

  • Build to web standards and keep content separate from style.
  • Assess needs first. Skip the Flash intro, and whatever replaced it.
  • A small site that says who you are, what you do and how to get it.
  • Test everywhere. Then it meant browsers; now it means phones.
  • Full feeds, not teasers.

Changed

  • sIFR and Flash gave way to ordinary web fonts.
  • MooTools and Prototype gave way to jQuery, then to frameworks and the browser's own APIs.
  • Old browsers stopped being a question once browsers updated themselves.
  • Customers search on a phone, often from a map, not a desk.
  • The site is rarely the whole job. Booking and payments sit behind it.

New in 2026

The studio's clients were small local businesses. The question those businesses ask now isn't about the site, it's about what to run behind it: what to put behind a small business site.
